Abdomen/Pelvis
CT
Overview-
An abdomen and pelvic CT is a diagnostic test that produces
“cross-sectional” pictures of the body. This exam
shows the venous system, organs, bones, and tissues in great
detail.
Preparation-
You will need to come by the Radiology Department and pick
up a prep kit. You cannot eat or drink anything four hours
before your test. The prep kit contains oral contrast that
you will be instructed to drink before your exam. There will
be a detailed instruction sheet included with your oral contrast.
v If you are over 70 and/or a diabetic, you
will need to have lab work done to check your creatinine and
BUN levels before you can have the procedure done with contrast.
Length of Exam-
The abdomen/pelvis CT exam takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes.
How is the exam performed?
You will be escorted from the Radiology waiting room to a
dressing room in the department. You will be asked to change
into a gown. When you enter the CT room, you will be asked
to lie on a table connected to the CT scanner. The table moves
in and out of the CT scanner (a large donut shaped machine
that is open on both ends ). You must stay completely still
during the scan. For an abdomen and pelvis CT you will be
asked to hold your breath for a short period of time. Depending
upon your physicians request, we may need to start an IV in
order to give the IV contrast. Please see the IV contrast
sheet located on the main CT page for more information about
the contrast.
Results-
Please contact your physician for the results of your test.
The results will be available within a couple of days.
