NM Gastric Emptying

Overview-
This test is performed to tell how well the stomach is functioning and emptying.

Preparation-
Nothing to eat for 8 hours prior to the test.

Length of exam-
1 - 2 hours

How is the exam performed?
The technologist will mix a radioactive tracer in a bowl of oatmeal. You will then be asked to eat a small bowl of the oatmeal. You will not be able to notice any difference in the taste. Images will be taken every 10 minutes until the stomach empties.

Results-
Please contact your physician for the results of your test. The results will be available within a couple of days.
