Lung Scan (VQ)
Overview-
This test is done to evaluate air distribution and blood flow
within the lungs. It is used to diagnose pulmonary embolus
in patients with shortness of breath or chest pain.
Preparation-
You will need a recent chest x-ray unless you have had one
24 hours prior to the lung scan.
Length of exam-
60 minutes
How is the exam performed?
A lung scan is done in 2 parts. First you will breath in a
radioactive aerosol for approximately 10 minutes. You will
be lying on your back and the camera will move around your
chest and take 8 different images of your lungs. Then, the
technologist will give you an injection in the vein of your
arm and the camera will move around your chest and take the
same 8 pictures.
Results-
Please contact your physician for the results of your test.
The results will be available within a couple of days.
